Radio Communications Technician

Summary of essential job functions:


Experienced Radio Communication Technician will be responsible for testing, installation, repair and maintenance of conventional and/or trunking two-way radio products to include: analog and digital radio equipment including mobile and portable radios, and dispatching equipment, portable, mobile, repeater, microwave and control equipment from manufacturers such as Motorola and others.  Experience with Motorola MotoTRBO two-way radio equipment preferred.  Successful candidates for this position typically possess one or more of the following: Motorola P25 or MotoTRBO Radio Product Training Certificates, FCC License, ETA certification, CompTIA A+/Net+, Amateur Radio License and/or Ground Radio experience in one of the branches of the military.


Roles and responsibilities:


Must have and be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of:

  • RF circuitry and propagation, digital circuitry, solid state circuitry and A/C circuitry.
  • Installs, removes, tests, maintains, and repairs communications equipment or systems, including but not limited to, base and mobile two-way radios, antenna systems, emergency warning systems, and other state-of-the-art electronic communications measuring and surveillance equipment.
  • Checks frequencies and solves interference problem by troubleshooting using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, checklists, maintenance manuals, and schematics.
  • Installation of telecommunications equipment
  • Programing radio equipment
  • Good applied computer skills
  • Must be able to read and understand electronic drawings, schematics and documentation
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and repair at component level electronic equipment from schematics
  • Test, tune and align duplexers, pre-selectors, repeaters, base stations, mobiles and portables.
  • Maintain, configure digital Radio Dispatch Consoles
  • Must demonstrate competency in electronics soldering (surface and through hole)
  • Repairs and maintains test equipment.
  • Estimates repair of equipment parts and labor.
  • Orders parts needed for inventory
  • Record maintenance and repair work performed.
  • Maintain, and configure digital voice recording systems (DVRS)
  • Experience working with VSAT systems which includes: Performance preventative maintenance on VSAT equipment. Replacing defective components. Configuring/reconfiguring VSAT networks.
  • Experience in the testing and maintenance of various types of telephone apparatus, including, loud speaker equipment
  • Must be able to lift items that weigh 50 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Other duties as assigned

Tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Installation and removal of fixed equipment to Motorola R56 standards
  • Follow manufacturer's instructions and basic wiring diagrams provided with equipment
  • Operate test equipment required to analyze and optimize electronics equipment and use resulting measurements to evaluate and troubleshoot
  • Optimization of equipment to manufacturers specifications
  • Read and comprehend service manuals, schematics, and diagrams
  • Troubleshooting equipment to determine which module or component is defective enabling repair of equipment
  • Documentation of procedures, projects, and systems
  • Preventative Maintenance checks
  • Help other technicians with knowledge gained through training and on the job experience
  • Proper and timely completion of paperwork


Minimum qualifications and education requirements:


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Preferred candidates possess: Associates (AS) degree in Engineering, RF Communications or equivalent certification or 4 year's RF Electronics experience.
  • Effective communicator
  • Requires computer skills at a functioning proficiency
  • Ability to represent the company at all levels within organization
  • Ability to be self-motivating a necessity
  • Possess an ability to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check and have and acceptable driving record.
