Summary of essential job functions:

Michael Baker Global Services (MBGS) is seeking a Carpenter Helper to support its ongoing construction projects in Sydney, Australia. Carpenter Helpers work alongside to assist the Journey Carpenters in a support role. Their job is to make sure that Journeyman Carpenters are provided with the right type of tools and supplies, so that the project that they are working on, progresses smoothly.


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Clean work areas, machines, or equipment, to maintain a clean and safe job site.
  • Perform tie spacing layout and measure, mark, drill or cut.
  • Measure materials or objects for installation or assembly.
  • Mark reference points on construction materials.
  • Fasten timbers or lumber with glue, screws, pegs, or nails and install hardware.
  • Install wooden structural components.
  • Select tools, equipment, or materials from storage and transport items to work site.
  • Select construction materials.
  • Select construction equipment.
  • Move construction or extraction materials to locations where they are needed
  • Drill holes in timbers or lumber.
  • Cut timbers, lumber, or paneling to specified dimensions.
  • Position structural components.
  • Align, straighten, plumb, or square forms for installation.
  • Hold plumb bobs, sighting rods, or other equipment to aid in establishing reference points and lines.
  • Mark reference points on construction materials.
  • Erect scaffolding, shoring, or braces.
  • Assemble temporary equipment or structures.
  • Construct forms and assist in raising them to the required elevation.
  • Assist skilled construction personnel.
  • Build construction forms.
  • Install handrails under the direction of a carpenter.
  • Smooth or sand surfaces to remove ridges, tool marks, glue, or caulking.
  • Smooth surfaces with abrasive materials or tools.
  • Cut tile or linoleum to fit and spread adhesives on flooring for installation.
  • Apply adhesives to construction materials.
  • Cut carpet, vinyl or other flexible materials.
  • Secure stakes to grids for constructions of footings, nail scabs to footing forms, and vibrate and float concrete.
  • Compact materials to create level bases.
  • Finish concrete surfaces.
  • Install insulation in equipment or structures.

Minimum qualifications and education requirements:

  • Minimum of 3-years years total construction experience, must have worked under a carpenter for 2-years
  • Must be willing to deploy to project sites worldwide to complete construction projects.
  • Must have an active Secret clearance.


Preferred qualifications:

  • A high school diploma is preferred.


Physical requirements and working conditions:

  • Must be able to lift tool, materials, equipment in excess of 50lbs.
  • Must be able to work from all types of ladders and perform work at various heights.
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required by OSHA and EM-385.
